IntoBodmin has been awarded £640,000 in grants to renovate their Grade II listed building, which currently houses a café, co-working spaces, rentable rooms, and a licensed venue. Unfortunately, the building in Lower Bore Street is in poor condition and requires expensive maintenance. As a result, it will be closed for up to six months while the necessary renovations are carried out. During this time, IntoBodmin will temporarily relocate to Shop 14 on Fore Street.
The funding for the improvement of The Old Library in Bodmin came from various sources, including the Arts Council England, Cornwall Council, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. As part of the renovation, the facilities will be upgraded, and energy-efficient lighting and heating systems will be installed to make the building more sustainable.
According to Fin Irwin, the director of IntoBodmin, their goal has always been to secure the building as a community space. By owning The Old Library, they were able to secure vital funding and invest in the library's future. The building was originally opened in 1897 by Cornish philanthropist John Passmore Edwards as a free library for the people of Bodmin, and the team is proud to continue building on its legacy.
Nema Hart, the director of place, economy, and partnerships at Arts Council England's South West division, expressed her excitement for the development of The Old Library, a building with a rich history that will benefit the creative community and residents of Bodmin.
The renovation works began in July and are expected to be completed by January 2024. The team is excited to share the space with the wonderful people who use it and those who will discover it in the future.
